Horse Surfing FTW!!! [PICS]

A mounted thoroughbred gallops through the shallows, while a bloke on a board getting dragged behind skids across the water’s surface, landing jumps and flips over the incoming breakers. Spectacular certainly, but as extreme action goes it all seems rather British. This is horse surfing. Just the name of this new spin on board sports is enough to raise a few eyebrows – neigh, even elicit a few WTFs – but as with anything, don’t pooh-pooh it before you’ve given it a pop.

The Most Powerful Wall of Water On Earth

Big waves carry big reputations and it's easy to see why. Red hot surfing spots like Hawaii's Waimea Bay and the even more horrendously huge "Jaws" have become household as well as beach hut names, famed for waves towering up to 70 feet high. Yet height isn't the only measure of a wave, and another legendary break on the surfing circuit, Tahiti's Teahupo'o, has one of the heaviest and for many the thickest wave on the planet. Gnarly.

Mindblowing Art Installations Beneath the Waves

A scuba canoe trundles along the seabed like something out of the Wacky Races, while above the water's surface a modern day surfer cuts back smoothly off the top of a wave. It's a surreal concept, it's true, and yet as art and photography it's genius. This is just one of the incredible series of 'Dopamine' underwater art installations from surf/street/skate label Insight51, featuring the combined creative handiwork of Steve Gorrow and photographer Dustin Humphrey.

Shots from the Edge: Fire, Earth, Water & Air

Photographer Tumanc takes photographs at the limits – at points where opposing forces meet, complementing or conflicting with each another. Humans encounter the elements in spectacular style, and unless they play nature’s game are rendered insignificant by a greater might. The different elements meet one another too, earth, water, fire and air clashing and creating magical effects.

Radical Surfing Rodents

Australian surfer Shane Wilmott has trained his four pet mice to ride the waves. Using their tails as rudders, the mice are set on custom-made mice-sized boards – no glue or ties, they can jump off at any time – and are let loose on the water. Bunsen, Harry, Curly and Chopsticks we’re taken to the beach one day and owner, Shane says they took to the sea likes ducks to water.

Wave Vs. Man

Anyone who lives on the waves, or for them, has a healthy respect for the unbridled power of the seas. They know the destruction and devastation crashing walls of water can cause for they have observed Neptune’s wrath in the open ocean first-hand or they have ridden with him as one on the white-crested waves to shore.

Surfing the Longest Wave in the World

Every night and every day for just three days between February and March monsoon rains and a full moon cause a high tide at the mouth of the Amazon river where it meets the Atlantic to produce the longest wave on Earth. The dramatic change in tide forces the tide’s power upstream and as the river narrows and shallows a funnel effect is created causing the wave to gather momentum and speed. A thunderous wave then forms called the Pororoca.

Insane Surfer Hitches a Ride on Monster Shark

Surfing and sharks don’t mix. If you’ve ever seen the underbelly of a surfer lying on their board they make fantastic fish fodder but if a surfer gets bitten there’s a massive furore and a witch hunt for the toothy perpetrator. But some surfers know that the odds of getting mistaken for a tasty treat come with the territory. If you choose to spend hours in the ocean – home to all things sharky – chances are you might come face to face, or rather leg to jaw, with one of the finned creatures.
