7 Most Incredible Sunken Forests on Earth

Whether viewed from above or below the surface of the water, whether they are alive or dead, they stand like apparitions, almost supernatural in appearance by dint of the fact that they should not be there. Trees, common sense tells us, were designed to climb into the air rooted in solid ground, not water, and they certainly weren't meant to be found submerged beneath lakes, slowly rotting away like skeletons of their former selves.

Italy’s Drowned Village

Legend has it the bell can still be heard in the dead of winter, sounding out its knell despite the fact that it has long since been removed. The bell tower of the 14th century church that projects from Lake Reschen in the far north of Italy is all that is now visible of the once thriving village of Graun. In the middle of the last century, the town was drowned by the artificial lake that lies above it to this day.
