The Insane Designs of Signtology

What do Bob Marley, De la Soul, Muddy Waters and Spike Lee have in common? Not much you think? Ask Denver-based artist Dan “DUNN” Ericson a.k.a. the Signtologist and he’ll show you his collection of portraits. The unifying factor is that they are all done on old street signs. Who would have thought that One Way, No Parking, STOP or Tow Away Zone could be so inspirational?

Sao Paulo’s Incredible Storm Drain Graffiti

Where there is concrete, let there be colour; where there is asphalt, let there be kickass graffiti. The world’s metropolises are grey enough places without a hard line stance against good graffiti. Take Sao Paulo, whose sprawling mass is home to almost 20 million people. When street art duo 6EMEIA started painting storm drains in the Barra Funda neighbourhood of Brazil’s largest city, their plan was to transform everyday life in the way only a smile can.

Incredible Time-Lapse Graffiti by Blu and David Ellis

When we came across COMBO here at Environmental Graffiti, put simply we were blown away. A masterpiece of a collaboration between Bologna-based street artist and stop-motion painter Blu, and painter, film-maker and music performer David Ellis, COMBO is mesmerising, hands-on time lapse street art the like of which you might not have seen before.

The Irony of Hope

What is this? Get a graffiti artist week? In the space of seven days, one of the world’s most famous street artists has been in various brushes with the law. Late last week, Shepard Fairey, creator of the ‘Hope’ portrait of Barack Obama that showed up everywhere in the election, was arrested in Boston on vandalism charges. The arrest came just days after Fairey was in the headlines for allegedly illegally using a photo of Obama owned by the Associated Press.

Mutoid Waste Co. MuTATE Britain

A monster of a street art show, cheekily dubbed MuTATE Britain, ran amok through December in London, leaving thousands of gobsmacked visitors in its aftermath. Billed as an “interactive multimedia pile-up”, the work featured at this free, non-corporate extravaganza leapt out like some orgiastic post-apocalyptic cybernetic experiment.

8 Incredible Snow Face Sculptures

Anyone who lives in a country prone to heavy snowfalls will understand the strange pull of the powdery white stuff, as if it comes with a magnetic force able to draw even the most unplayful into interacting with it. And it’s almost completely impossible to pass an untainted area of pristine snowfall without leaving a mark, whether it’s foot prints or snow angels. Others like to, er, stick their face in it…

Guerilla-Style Street Art by LuzInterruptus

If you were in Madrid, Spain just before Christmas you may have noticed some very odd looking street lamps. As part of the Luz Interruptus (Red) Project, 26 street lights on Calle del Pez were subjected to street art guerrilla tactics. Spanish designers LuzInterruptus set up a temporary lighting installation using domestic square, frilly lampshades, which they taped to existing lights.

Amsterdam’s Moving Forest

If you’ve ever been hopelessly lost in an unfamiliar place at night you’ll recognize the feelings of frustration and fear. You think that you’re on the right path but a prickling sense of uncertainty washes over you. You question your movements and double back to make sure you’re on the right track… These are just the reactions Dutch architects NL and Droog Design were looking for when they created an installation in Amsterdam.

Bansky’s Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill

Banksy has opened a different sort of pet store in Greenwich Village and the 'animals' in the cages are something you would expect from a happy meal at McDonalds. The show entitled ‘The Village Pet Store and Grill' explores society's use of animals as pets, food, and clothing. Displays range from 'Chicken Nuggets' where the fast food treat appears to peck at a trough of ketchup to fish sticks floating in a fish bowl.
