Built as a 'palace in the sky' for a God-king, the mountain fortress of Sigirya boasts beautiful images that actually chronicle his more base instincts. It towers above the surrounding plains of the Matale district in the heart of the country and was carved from the hardened magma of what was once a volcano. Today, it stands as a reminder of the various ancient cultures that helped shape Sri Lanka down through the centuries.

Rama’s Bridge, also called Adam’s Bridge, is a 30-mile-stretch (48 km) of 103 sandbanks that form a natural connection between the island of Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, India and Mannar in northwestern Sri Lanka. Though usually a symbol of connection and peace, this particular bridge has caused controversy galore between Hindus, Moslems, politicians and environmentalists for quite a while now.

It is early in the morning, around 5:30 am, and the sun is about to rise. Though a cool pre-monsoon breeze is blowing, the sun will be beating down mercilessly by midday. The stilt fishermen of Kathaluwa have already assumed their lofty positions, balancing two metres above the coral reef. The catch of the day will determine if there will be food on the table tonight or not.

The Sri Lankan army made a startling discovery late last week. Deep in the jungle, about 370 km northeast of Colombo, they discovered a boat factory with a locally made, 35-feet-long, armour-plated underwater vehicle and various smaller, submarine-type vehicles, still under construction.
