2030: The Year Solar Energy Will Be Beamed Down From Space With Lasers!

Since the 1960s, space enthusiasts and international space agencies have had one dream: to collect solar power and use it on earth. What seemed utopic more than 40 years ago is about to become reality: the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency JAXA especially is hell-bent on harvesting solar energy from space by 2030. Let's take a trip up into the Earth's orbit to get a glimpse of this brave new world.

How Photovoltaic (Solar) Cells Work

Assuming that demand remains constant, oil reserves can cover global energy needs for no more than 40 years. Energy crunch is imminent unless alternative sources are deployed. Among renewable energy technologies, photovoltaics is currently enjoying the largest growth rate. While the solar energy absorbed by the Earth's surface in one hour is more than the energy used worldwide in a whole year, solar panels account for only 0.0008% of total energy consumption. But dauntless scientists are working steadily towards resolving such absurdities.
