The Montreal International Jazz Festival – the largest of its kind in the world – has just pulled the curtain down on its annual mix of music and visitors from all over the globe. To celebrate its 30th anniversary, this year there was something extra-special about the Jazz Fest. Not only were the jazz notes as blue as the deep sea, but the festival adopted a green ethos that matched the lushness of many of the city’s spaces.

British born and based artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster skilfully skirt the boundaries between beauty and the shadowier aspects of humanity, playing with our perceptions as well as our notions of taste. Many of their most notable pieces are made from piles of rubbish, with light projected against them to create a shadow image entirely different to that seen when looking directly at the deliberately disguised pile.

This week, an eccentric British man, named Gordon Stewart, was found dead within a labyrinth of tunnels in his own home. It’s not that he lived in a mansion and therefore needed the tunnel system to get from room to room, far from it. He lived in a normal two-storey house, with mountains, and mountains, and mountains of garbage he’d collected over a 10 year period.

It’s an unfortunate but necessary evil that trash has to lay littering the streets until collection. It’s not clean and it’s not pretty. Well, it wasn’t until artist Adrian Kondratowicz collaborated with Renee Mlynaryk to design and produce a range of colorful trash bags which have decorated the streets of New York since May this year.

Goldsmith's design graduate, Oliver Bishop-Young, unveiled two interesting proposals for the re-use of dumpsters (or skips as they're called in the UK) at the New Designers' festival earlier this month - but would you have lunch in a dumpster, or more to the point, would you swim in one? The first proposal is for a website where people can share information about the contents of their skip and others can salvage it (demo now online).

Our friends at Men's Vogue recently featured an interesting interview with eco-adventurer, David de Rothschild, and although he may be a member of one of the world's most famous banking families, he's far from being all about the deal - his environmental interests have taken him across the globe from New Zealand to the frozen ice caps of Greenland and now the intrepid explorer is about to embark on one of his most challenging expeditions to date: crossing the Pacific on a boat made of garbage!
