Though people generally speak of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, it was the city of Pripyat that actually housed the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and was founded in 1970 just for this purpose. Before the disaster on April 26, 1986 that saw the destruction of Reactor No. 4 and the release of huge clouds of radioactive material, the town was home to around 50,000 people. Solar flares are like the Sun's equivalents of Earth's natural hazards, though of course they occur on a much larger scale. It would be nice to say such phenomena have minimal impact on the environment or life on Earth, but solar flares do strongly influence our local space weather – and who knows what a biggie could do?
