The Prestes Maia is an abandoned highrise complex in São Paolo. In the 12 years since its abandonment, the building had become a home of filth and squalor, with crime, drugs and occasional loitering running rampant. In 2002, a group known as the Downtown Roofless Movement moved in to clean things up. For 4 years they lived and thrived in the Prestes Maia until the original owners decided to pay a few bills and take the building back.

Missiles may rain down overhead, water canons blast people back, tear gas choke throats and worse, but when people decide they’ve had enough, they’ve had enough. Many would argue that if ever there was proof that actions speak louder than words, mass protesting is it. Images of individuals taking to the streets have become etched in our minds, each one a remembrance of how people felt about the status quo.
