"Don't eat so fast!" and "chew your food!" are words most people have heard at some point during their upbringings, but most animals don't have the luxury of paying attention to the finer points of good table manners and digestion. Competition is fierce out there in the wild, and many creatures have been designed to guzzle down their meals as quickly as possible, whether it's alive and flapping or not.

We’re used to seeing flying animals like birds, insects and even bats taking wing and soaring through the air, leaving us to curse the fact that we weren’t born with the same innate superpower. We’ve also featured a few of nature’s gliders here on EG – creatures like the flying tree snake, flying fish, and sugar glider – but are yet to focus on those beasties that use jumping as a form of movement and means of getting airborne to catch their next meal.

Predation. It's meat and drink to anyone interested in our obsessive documenting of the natural world. Maybe it has to do with parallels with the culture we live in, where many seem only too eager to prey on perceived weaker individuals for their own prosperity. Everyone’s dreamed of being a fly, right? Well maybe not everyone. But if you were to be a fly for a day, there are quite a few dangers you’d have to watch out for. Fly swats and sprays would seem pretty obvious ones; predatory insects and spiders too; but a plant with gaping jaws? It wouldn’t hurt to land on that juicy looking sucker for a quick rest would it?
