Any predator catching prey is a sight to behold but there’s something about seeing large birds like eagles literally swoop down from the sky to catch their meals. How would you like to be that salmon, swimming innocently downstream and then suddenly being plucked out of the water and lifted high up into the air? We’ve caught a bald eagle doing exactly that. It's an amazing snapshot – so amazing that many have been quick to cry fake: North America's most iconic falls, apparently frozen mid-flow – but what moment in time is frozen in sepia within this frame? One might think the answer would be simple, but with the origins of this photo veiled in a mist of uncertainty like the spray produced by the falls themselves, nothing is guaranteed.

This beautiful photo was taken on the corner of Buci and Seine in St-Germain-des-Pres, Paris. The photographer Brent Townshend used multiple fisheye lenses and self-written software to stitch the panoramic series of shots together, composing the eye-catching final image. He says that the emergent shape of a dove was planned at the time of photographing.
