Crescent-Shaped Earth Rising, As Seen From The Moon

Just like people on Earth debate if the moon looks like a face or a rabbit on certain days or forms a smiley face with two stars, have you ever thought about what the Earth looks like from the Moon? And that the Earth rises there as well? If you happen to be there, that is, or even better, orbiting around it. Luckily, astronauts have been taking pictures of Earthrises for a while. Here’s a breathtaking selection.

The Hubble Telescope’s Final Mission

Hubble's last Service Mission was an astounding success. Instruments and insulation blanket were repaired and upgraded, and new capability was added to this truly exceptional orbiting observatory. Hubble Space Telescope, whose importance rivals that of the first optical telescope made by Galileo, will continue to probe the mysteries of the universe through 2013. Space Launches As You’ve Never Seen Them Before

Oh. My. Golly. What a shot. Taken in 1998, this awesome image shows NASA's Lunar Prospector spacecraft shooting into the sky above Cape Canaveral. Destination is in sight. The fiery launch tail forms an arch in the foreground, while the moon, near first quarter phase, looks on, some 250,000 miles away. Prepare for blast-off as we explore stunning photos of space launches and wonder what it all means from an environmental point of view.

The Moons of the Ringed Gas Giant: Saturn

On February 24, 2009, four of Saturn's moons transited the planet. A fortuitous line of sight allowed the Cassini spacecraft to capture Dione, Enceladus, Mimas and Titan in a single, extraordinary photograph. Remarkable space probe data allow us to better understand this dynamic and complex planet.

The 15 Million Year-Old Lake

Life forms from 15 million years ago may still be present on Earth if the discovery of a new lake 4km below the surface of the ice in east Antarctica is as fruitful as scientists believe it to be. Scientists believe that the water inside Lake Vostok could contain new lifeforms and possibly shed light on other planets.

Iridescent Sky

This very cool shot was captured in Southern California not far Vandenburg Air Force Base. A Minotaur rocket had launched just about an hour before the photo was taken, leaving behind a very photogenic plume of smoke. The contrail shows amazing flashes of color picked up from the setting sun, even though it was captured at night.
