Italy’s Drowned Village

Legend has it the bell can still be heard in the dead of winter, sounding out its knell despite the fact that it has long since been removed. The bell tower of the 14th century church that projects from Lake Reschen in the far north of Italy is all that is now visible of the once thriving village of Graun. In the middle of the last century, the town was drowned by the artificial lake that lies above it to this day.

The 15 Million Year-Old Lake

Life forms from 15 million years ago may still be present on Earth if the discovery of a new lake 4km below the surface of the ice in east Antarctica is as fruitful as scientists believe it to be. Scientists believe that the water inside Lake Vostok could contain new lifeforms and possibly shed light on other planets.

Nature’s Deadly Bong

Limnic eruptions are well outside of public consciousness. Not surprising, considering their extreme rarity. In all of recorded human history we only know of two for certain. Both occurred in Africa in the 1980s; one at Lake Monoun in 1984 and then a particularly deadly one at Lake Nyos in 1986. The latter killed as many as 1,800 people and the lakes have yet to recover.

Lakes… 650ft Beneath the Waves!

Deep beneath the waves, far down on the ocean floor are scenes often associated with the stuff of nightmares – translucent fish with wide black eyes capable of seeing in the dark, shell fish with bioluminescent skeletons and colossal squid, so huge that no one has yet to picture them. All these creatures, though bizarre, are somehow quite expected but it’s doubtful whether many people would imagine a lake lying down there, too.
