The mighty bird wheels high overhead, then dives like an arrow from the apex of its arc. On the plain floor, the lone wolf glances back while continuing its faltering trot onwards. Without warning, the giant raptor appears out of the sky, hitting its target at high velocity while clawing and raking with razor-sharp talons. The wolf bites back at its far more lightweight attacker and for a brief instant the bird of prey appears prone – but in an instant, it lunges back at its canine quarry, fixing it in an iron grip. The wolf struggles for a few seconds. Then it lies still.

Sometimes we humans think we've got it all sown up when it comes to inventing ingenious means for surviving in environments in which we weren't meant to last two minutes. The the archetypal deep sea diver is a case in point. Yet while the image of a man in a cumbersome metallic suit with a cross between an armoured helmet and a goldfish bowl on his head might strike you as inspired, it starts to look a little foolish when compared with the grace of a kitted up diving bell spider.

They say the eyes are the window to the soul, but the ones collected here make you ponder whether they lead straight to the stomach. Still, staring back at you, they also show that bloodthirsty can be beautiful – like this shot of a crocodile’s eye close up. Check out the detail in the croc's iris. It's like gazing at a landscape from above, with the pupil an opening into an abyss.

Its tongue flickers snakishly from a mouth filled with toxic potential but its body boasts the bulk of a crocodile's. Armed with the lethal weapons of our most feared reptilian counterparts, the Komodo dragon is best left alone. There's just one snag: the Komodo dragon wouldn't necessarily want to leave you alone, and you might not even know about it if it were on your tail. What's more, it now seems that the largest lizard on the planet is deadlier than anyone previously thought.

The Australian aboriginal Dreamtime is a timeless mythic 'world' that exists for all eternity. In the Dreamtime, the Ancestors walked the earth, and created everything - plants, animals, geology and landscape. Many rituals in Australian aboriginal culture allow the tribe to contact the Dreamtime, to once again 'live in it' and be renewed, if only for a short time.
