Tens of thousands throng the streets in the town of Alanganallur, and the hush that falls signals something is happening. Suddenly, a path is ripped through the sea of people by the beast – the juggernaut – all have come to see. Garlanded with flowers and coloured powder (gulal), the bull charges from its human corridor into the open bent on wreaking havoc with horns sharpened to deadly points. The competitors swallow their nerves, ready to leap on the animal already scattering bodies.

Big waves carry big reputations and it's easy to see why. Red hot surfing spots like Hawaii's Waimea Bay and the even more horrendously huge "Jaws" have become household as well as beach hut names, famed for waves towering up to 70 feet high. Yet height isn't the only measure of a wave, and another legendary break on the surfing circuit, Tahiti's Teahupo'o, has one of the heaviest and for many the thickest wave on the planet. Gnarly.

High seas beset by towering waves, swell churning up hazardous freezing waters, and heavy machinery tied to treacherous equipment. Reasons enough why Alaskan crab fishing ranks as the deadliest job in the America – if not the world. Even such descriptions do little justice to the extremity of the conditions confronted by the fishermen out on the storm-ridden Bering Sea during the cruel Arctic winter.

It might look like blossom floating in the wind, but it’s arguably the most dangerous – not to say most contentious – sport in the world. And not just for those taking part. As if Pakistan didn’t have enough troubles to contend with on the ground, kite flying in its Punjab province was deemed so treacherous it was banned there a few years ago – spoiling the fun for those who enjoyed the excitement, though probably saving a few lives.
