Centuries before the modern age of skyscrapers dawned in Chicago and New York, the Middle East had its own skyscraper city – the oldest on earth. This is Shibam in Yemen, a place thought to have existed since the 2nd Century AD.

Out of destruction comes creation, for good or for bad. Like any living organism and everything else, a building has a life-cycle. And when that reaches its natural conclusion, work needs to be done to knock it down so the site can be used for something else – another Wal-Mart, perhaps, or a new Ikea. Yet whatever else may be raised on the grave of the structure being razed, demolition itself can be a thing of beauty.

The article was proving hard to get to grips with. Fingers cramped from repeated clicking, retinas burned by pixels formed into many shapes and sizes, brain fried from over stimulation, the lonely writer laboured on, all but spent. Image search after image search was yielding many a distraction or two, but the deadline was looming larger still. It was too late to shirk from the knockers now.
