What is this? Get a graffiti artist week? In the space of seven days, one of the world’s most famous street artists has been in various brushes with the law. Late last week, Shepard Fairey, creator of the ‘Hope’ portrait of Barack Obama that showed up everywhere in the election, was arrested in Boston on vandalism charges. The arrest came just days after Fairey was in the headlines for allegedly illegally using a photo of Obama owned by the Associated Press.

On this day in 1915 (from the day of publishing, at least), argueably the strangest man-made disaster ever happened in Boston when a 50 foot, 2.3 million gallon tank of molasses collapsed. This created a wave of sugary destruction up to 15 feet-high, travelling at the breakneck speed (for molasses) of 35 mph and what must surely be one of the hardest clean-up efforts of a non-inherently lethal substance in recent history.
