Massive Explosion a Universe Far Far Away

The most massive explosion ever recorded anywhere in the universe, occurred sometime after September 15, 2008. 12.2 billion light years from earth, a super massive star exploded and then possibly imploded to a black hole. Incredibly intense gamma ray radiation was released, traveled across space and time to be recorded by the GLAST research satellite.

Understanding Black Holes

Black Holes have been confirmed by the tens of thousands throughout the universe. Often located at the center of large galaxies, they power star formation and are the most spectacular example of a 'singularity' - an object where the laws of nature as we understand them do not apply.

Environmental Graffiti’s Guide to Black Holes

Einstein predicted them in General Relativity and finally the first Black Hole was found in 1971. Now massive black holes are believed to live at the center of most galaxies. Black holes have infinite mass, but no volume and no dimensions. Welcome to a 'universe' where the laws of physics as we know them do not apply.

Supermassive Black Hole at the Center of the Milky Way

Astronomers made a spectacular announcement in late fall, 2008. Suspected for several years, a massive black hole has been identified at the galactic center. Black holes are still difficult to understand. They are created by the gravitational collapse of the most massive stars. Some of the star's material is blown away in a colossal explosion called a supernovae.

Mysterious Explosion 1,000 Times Greater than Hiroshima

On June 30, 1908, the Earth experienced an explosion 1,000 times the magnitude of the the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan (shown above). The event resulted in the flattening of 80 million trees over an area roughly the size of Washington DC, and a century later scientists and UFO enthusiasts are still debating about what caused this colossal 5-30 megaton blast.
