This beastie looks like a horror movie monster – perhaps an amalgamation of one of the bloodthirsty giant worms from Tremors and the terrifying extraterrestrials in Aliens – but let's give "Barry" a break. In a classic case of B-movie baddie turned A-list luminary, the affectionately named giant sea worm was yesterday discovered terrorizing other aquatic life in an aquarium in Cornwall, England, but today proving to be the star attraction there.

For centuries we humans have held a morbid fascination of sharks. They’re elusive, intriguing and terrifying all at the same time. We’re enamoured by them. So it’s no surprise that this image has been unearthed for plans of a huge submarine shark observatory, from Science and Mechanics Magazine. Check out their design; it offers much more freedom to roam than today’s aquarium enclosures.

Inspired by the swirling currents of the ocean, a new state-of-the-art aquarium due to open in Copenhagen is modelled on a giant whirlpool, giving one the opportunity to view marine life in its element. But are we witnessing a new breed of environmental entertainment? The building is based around a central ‘round room’ around which different sequences of rooms ‘whirl’, each with its own unique journey into the murky depths.
