The squawking laughter is enough to send a Hitchcockian chill up anyone’s spine, though if you live anywhere near the coast – or increasingly in cities further inland – seagulls are as ubiquitous as pigeons. But bigger. And much more vicious. Every year, new reports telling similar stories rear their ugly head, with headlines shrieking warnings about gulls terrorising people, particularly in the soft underbelly of the British Isles. Queensland, Australia. Philip Mclean, a 16 year-old boy, and his brother, aged 13, encounter a cassowary. Despite the size of the brightly coloured bird before them, the Mclean brothers attempt to bludgeon it to death with clubs. It is a fatal mistake. The elder brother lands a blow on the beast but is knocked to the ground. Lying prone, Philip is kicked in the neck by the cassowary, opening a deadly wound.
