Since May 24 2009 the Hubble Space Telescope is in better condition than it has ever been, thanks to Service Mission 4 by the crew of seven on board the Space Shuttle Atlantis. The HST should now keep on observing the Universe until the James Webb Space Telescope is placed in orbit in 2014. The seven astronauts met up with the telescope on May 13, 2009. They used the Shuttle's robotic arm to place it on a rotating stand in the Shuttle's payload bay.

Five space walks lasting a total of 37 hours were completed to repair the 'Advanced Camera for Surveys' and the Imaging Spectrograph. They also installed the Wide Field Camera 3 and the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph. The telescope's batteries were also replaced, plus gyroscopes.

The first images from the upgraded telescope should be made public in September 2009.
