We won't give chemo if you get cancer, or insulin if you get diabetes. If you are so adamant about your opinion, I guess you can consider the other end of it too. If you are even capable of any sensible thought at all, that is. Man did not miraculously invent a computer in a day. It started with an abacus, or something similar, tens of centuries ago. Research like this, though it may sound silly, will further our understanding a bit more. Someday, this might lead to some new discovery that will help mankind venture further into space for longer periods of time. And scientists are well aware that humanity's ultimate future lies in space. Science is about learning from experimentation. Some experiments sound cool while other sound mundane. Yet there is scientific knowledge in it all. Man will never colonize space unless research is undertaken decades, centuries, or even several millenia prior. I do, however, think shooting fish into space is an absolutely hilarious and ridiculously expensive way to study something that already has an effective treatment.
