Men No Longer Needed to Create Sperm

4 years ago Science

It looks like males will soon be irrelevant to the survival of the human race.

Scientists at the University of Newcastle have managed to create human sperm cells using a female embryonic stem cell.

The researchers, led by Prof Karim Nayernia, had previously created primitive sperm cells from male bone marrow. They’re currently working on making the cells from female bone marrow, which would be much easier and more practical than creating them from embryos.

The creation means that lesbian couples could soon have children that shared the DNA of both women, rather than having one male biological father. A sperm cell created from one partner could fertilize her partner’s egg.

There is some question about whether a sperm cell created from a female could produce viable, healthy offspring. The human female sperm cells could not in their current state produce offspring as they do not have the correct amount of genetic material. The team must next have the cells undergo meiosis to make sure the cells have the correct amount of genetic material.

That will likely only be a minor roadblock. Prof Nayernia has already overcome this problem with sperm cells created from male cells. In 2006, he used sperm created from embryonic stem cells to impregnate mice. The mice produced 7 pups, although one died and the other six had health problems.

Ok, so it may be overstating it a bit to say that males will be irrelevant. Just because we’re not technically needed to breed doesn’t mean women will no longer find men attractive, right? After all, we’re good for a lot more than just baby making. We’ve got tons to offer! For instance, just the other day I assembled a chair from Ikea, and it only wobbles a tiny bit when you sit on it. Also, I’m frequently asked to kill insects. I think we men have a bright future.

I think we are looking at this wrong, me nor my husband can have children due to cancer this would allow us to have kids of our own, I am hoping this becomes a reality and that people can understand it is not just for same sex people, there are alot of us out here who want kids but can not for various reasons, ours being cancer and although we both survived it, the price we paid is not being able to have our children.

this is not a bad discovery. this is fantastic because there are lesbian couples that want their children to biologically be both of theirs, not one and some random sperm. its a personal choice and youre bing assholes if you dont agree with it

I'm sorry but this will start a whole lot of crap. They should be paying more attention to finding a cure for something else. It will be a things women vs men. If this gets the green light believe me when I say this some crazy guy will start some big crap and injury or death will be added to this lesson towards them. Great break through but I feel they should leave this alone...

Great news!!! Once more women have been proven to be unique. We don't need men. We are so complete in ourselves. Guys are egoistic, lazy, short tempered, emotional like a baby and adamant. But undeniably, men and women together make the world grow and flourish. There are many other aspects of a relationship of a man and a woman. We can not confine it to just sexual bond. We need u guys!!! This study is welcome anyways...

This is totally wrong. This and almost every science experiment in the history has been made by MEN, not women. So go ahead producing womanized "men" and we will see human civilization destroyed in 3 o 5 generations ahead. Men can live without women, we just need a microwave and a washing machine. Yeah it is hard to work all day and return home to wash oru clothes, but we are capable of live like that. But women cant live without men, they need us to protect them, to feed them. Women need a man at his side to feel comfortable, protected and happy. Specially in latin countries like where i live, women are just reproducing machines to have babies and wash her husband´s underwear. Their role in society is nothing more of that. We the men have also invented everything we see around, like cars, rockets, airplanes, houses, skycrappers, aircraft carriers, satellites, and just almost everything. You just have to see women around the world speaking day and night non stop with their celle phones attached to their ears, well without men there would be no cell phones either. So women you just go ahead trying to live 1 year without men, and after ruining the entire civilization with unfixed cars, airplanes, trains, satellites, roads, municipal services, healthcare, communications, and everything else, You women will have to retire and live in the top of the trees again like millions of years ago, asking yourselves what went wrong, and crying to the return of the "impractical" and "useless" men.

no one will ever understand or know what it feels like to not be able to have children from the one you love even if that means your significant other is a female! bravo bravo!

Well as long as we're talking about this, don't forget about the artificial womb which is currently under development and will likely be available in our life time. Picture a gestation room with rows and rows of artifical wombs breeding children for women that are either unable or simply don't want to carry their babies through a full pregnancy. Enter the ability to eventually turn an X into a Y, or better yet create an egg from male DNA and wamo men are back on the map. Everything works out in the end my friends. Enjoy.

Or better yet, let's create a bizarre hybrid THIRD gender so that we can have some additional option for dating on Friday nights?! Morons!
