Men No Longer Needed to Create Sperm

It looks like males will soon be irrelevant to the survival of the human race.
Scientists at the University of Newcastle have managed to create human sperm cells using a female embryonic stem cell.
The researchers, led by Prof Karim Nayernia, had previously created primitive sperm cells from male bone marrow. They’re currently working on making the cells from female bone marrow, which would be much easier and more practical than creating them from embryos.
The creation means that lesbian couples could soon have children that shared the DNA of both women, rather than having one male biological father. A sperm cell created from one partner could fertilize her partner’s egg.
There is some question about whether a sperm cell created from a female could produce viable, healthy offspring. The human female sperm cells could not in their current state produce offspring as they do not have the correct amount of genetic material. The team must next have the cells undergo meiosis to make sure the cells have the correct amount of genetic material.
That will likely only be a minor roadblock. Prof Nayernia has already overcome this problem with sperm cells created from male cells. In 2006, he used sperm created from embryonic stem cells to impregnate mice. The mice produced 7 pups, although one died and the other six had health problems.
Ok, so it may be overstating it a bit to say that males will be irrelevant. Just because we’re not technically needed to breed doesn’t mean women will no longer find men attractive, right? After all, we’re good for a lot more than just baby making. We’ve got tons to offer! For instance, just the other day I assembled a chair from Ikea, and it only wobbles a tiny bit when you sit on it. Also, I’m frequently asked to kill insects. I think we men have a bright future.

Just an observation that, since the male carries the Y chromosome which leads to male offspring, only female offspring can come of this process. Therefore if a male child is desired, male genetic material must be involved.

notice as well that while this will eventually, after further research beable to produce viable sperm, if there is ever a global even that makes men very very scarce (a star trek voyager episode, one of the later foundation series books by asamof, other works of fiction) the male gender will essentially cease to exist. without at least one male sperm cell to produce another male, once the last man is gone, the human race will consist entirely of women.
for some reason this makes me feel a bit more expendable than i am comfortable with. some times i think that research for the pure sake of research… is not so good.

It would be far easier to have XX people with male phenotypic reproductive organs producing double XX sperm which themselves would have an equal ratio of females with male characteristics to females with female characteristics. It’s interesting how hostile and antagonistic the male reactions are to this. I believe that, if the reverse were possible (men could carry babies and sperm could be modified to work as eggs), women would be pretty happy not to have to be the only ones enduring the difficulties of child-bearing.
If this sort of thing really were possible, I’m guessing the party might be over for many men and all their self-centered, selfish, and arrogant behavior might diminish. Honestly, all the pompous talk about how men are more logical and capable in so many ways seriously smacks of a desperate attempt to both show how “important” they are to the world order and to impotently flex some sort of muscle which they hope women lack and therefore show that they’re so relevant.
My husband is a dream and I wouldn’t trade him for anything, but he’s nothing like the males commenting here and wouldn’t be intimidated by this sort of news. He actually has value outside his pants as well as inside. That makes him a very rare and valuable commodity compared to the vast majority of his gender.

Watch a tv sitcom - the men are usually portrayed as bumbling incompetant fools.
Read some statistics about divorce issues - there are men out there getting royally f**ked just because they’re men.
Hell, I came across a webpage the other day that described an actual court case (among other similar ones) where it was, in effect, a woman raping an unconscious, drunk guy who didn’t have the faintest idea what had happened (ie: no consent was given or even able to be given)…. until she took him to court for child support. And WON! The ‘moral’ of the webpage? (which was full of documentation, btw, wasn’t just bs.) That regardless of what condition the man was in, even if he was underage(!), and regardless of the funny-business the woman went to in order to impregnate herself, men are liable for whatever happens to their sperm.

This discovery is amazing, but should go no further than the lab. I see no reason for female sperm except in lesbian couples, and frankly, there is nothing wrong with adopting when the alternative is the manipulation of genetics.

I don’t think its a sympathy plea, I don’t think men deserve sympathy, nor women. I think they deserve equality. The crimes of the past, manifold as they may be, were perpetrated and taught to us, men and women, by those who came before. Rising above those crimes and attitudes, for both sexes, is the issue you’re getting at, Disappointed. The topic of this article has more to do with men being ‘obsolete.’
Maybe biologically male-female interaction is no longer required for procreation, but I find that men and women both are viable, interesting creatures who will never be obsolete. (Maybe evolved, but not just useless)
Anyway, I believe women need to be raised and recognized in their equality, men should realize what they have and yet fight for what remains out of their reach (emotional respect and acknowledgment, respect as an individual) and everyone who thinks that women or men are superior, they are the main part of the problem and need to get chucked in a poisoned lake.

As a for instance, 70-90% of contested custody disputes in the U.S. (depending on the state you live in) go to men.. (Here in Canada, the number is closer to 50/50..) Abusive men are twice as likely to sue for custody as non-abusive men..
Most violent crimes are committed by men..
Things are getting better for women in general, but way too slowly..
If men in general feel abused these days, maybe it’s because the tides are slowly turning and the balance is being struck.. Watch some TV from 20 years ago see how women were depicted and treated..

So pretty much dont get your hopes up, all they have managed to do is create a look alike sperm that contains only half the creative qualities of a real sperm. If lesbians (who are the sole beneficiarys of this research) are so desperate to have babies sharing both parents DNA, they have to ask themselves is it really worth it when I risk my child’s health for his entire life. If they still say yes, then they care more about the genetics of the child rather than the well being of the child. It then seems little more than boasting rights “Ya my cild has BOTH mon’s genes SO TAKE THAT HOMOPHOBE” and then the child walks in with down syndome, three eyes, and a malformed cleft.

Interesting bits of info not covered:
The only real difference between non-mitochondrial female and male DNA in egg/sperm is due to imprinting which deactivates certain parts of the DNA from each parent. You can convert the DNA from the egg form to the sperm form by re-imprinting. Thus, if you had a donor egg to provide the mitochondiral DNA, you could convert a sperm to a pseudo egg, merge it with a real egg stripped of it’s DNA, and permit gay men to raise children together too.
Also, because it is the sperm which contains the Y chromosome (which women don’t have), lesbian couples can ONLY have daughters, even with this technique!

Scientists, and many other people, just don’t believe, and are not willing to pretend, that they know where everything comes from. But they are looking for answers, and continuing to find them. Their motives include curiosity, a belief that understanding the universe helps the human condition, and the very human need to put food on their table and have a good life, etc.
No lack of honesty or morals there. Lots of lack of honesty and morals in someone demonizing good productive people because they don’t “believe” a particular pet theory of where everything comes from.
Why do some people think beliefs make people good? Its what you do, the choices you make, that make you good or bad.

@disappointed: I don’t want sympathy, I’d sincerely love if both sexes could rise above it all and be truly equal. But you can see from the comments here that for some men, we truly do feel like we have no purpose other than to get women pregnant.

Read your stat again - 70-90% of *contested* custody disputes - it’s contested because teh first time around, women get sole custody 80%+ of the time.
And actually, according to a quick google, in Canada, in about 79% of custody cases, the custody is given exclusively to women, compared to 6.6* exclusively to men and 13% as shared. Not the 50/50 you claimed.
Oh, and the majority of child abuse is actually committed by the biological mother - 58%.

As a man, I don’t worry about being replaced — the genetic material and life conditions that gave rise to this particular consciousness can be approximated, but never replicated. I create my value through the work that I do, and through the relationships I build. Junk this nonsense about opening jars, parking cars, or the now seemingly obsolete “baby-making”. People aren’t robots, and we don’t have sex strictly for procreation. In fact, I’d like to think that to date, I’ve never had sex with the intention of making a child, and there are many like me out there, I’m sure. We will always enjoy the company of an other, someone whom we are unafraid to share our naked moments with.
Just because we change how, where, and why we can conceive a new life, doesn’t mean that it changes who we’re attracted to, and why we’re attracted to them.

OK, if you knew anything about science you would know that not all “discoveries” are announced by press-release. These findings need to be peer-reviewed and published before it will ever gain scientific acceptance. This is PRELIMINARY and only means that there is enough substance to possibly fund further research.
Go back to crying over the fact that no one wants ignorant sperm.

ok i think that both men and woman are equal, and that we aren’t treated the same because when we are kids we are taught that girls need to be given advantages, like in basket ball girls get double points or some bs like that, also men need to start setting the bar equally, saying they do half the work and that she should do the other half. Women need to accept this and equalize the advantages they have, like suducing men, pulling the sympathey card or saying hitting girls is wrong

second of all, go shari for loving your husband and for not seeing the violence that is in fact typified in our society- like it or not- by men, as intrinsic in all men; or the priveleged, dumb arrogance as typified by nice folk like bob from keeping you from seeing that despite all that there is still a chance for us to be equals. if both of you have a bone to pick with the other gender, i would much rather sit down in a train car with shari, who at least managed to show some compassion despite her “assault.” i would not go near bob with a ten foot pole (and i’m guessing his pole is not that long anyway.)

This is going too far, IMO. I mean - sure - it may just be a scientific experiment, but… wouldn’t all that money and time be better spent solving genetic disorders, like Down’s or Cystic Fibrosis, rather than modifying genes and cells so that you don’t need men. I am a firm believer of scientology - they are making amazing progress - but something like this is just purely unnecessary. Sure, human nature means that we are curious - and to experiment - but seriously. This isn’t needed, and I doubt that this research will do anything to solve the world’s problems.
To all the commenters: Equality between the sexes is non-existant. It is at an equilibrium. Whilst men do have an advantage in some areas, women have advantages in other areas. I think it is becoming more equal, however.

we males, even with our puny, missing a leg Y chromosome compared to the female’s diesel, more bigger and stronger chromosome XX and our fewer genes and our minor part of procreation, we males still are valuable.

There are animals that reproduce without males, parthenogenesis. Some bees, ants and crayfish along with some lizards (15 species of the whiptail), and some sharks. I remember reading something regarding parthenogenesis that a few scientists have noticed that more and more animals are starting to reproduce that way and that the Y chromosome is considered “broken” (that’s my non-scientific & lazy term) and will eventually stop being produced leaving only XX so that all animals will have to reproduce that way.
Parthenogenesis is moving up the ladder, so to speak, of animals. It’s just a matter of time before they find a mammal reproducing that way in the wild and then who knows what will happen.

I can imagine a world without men with women reproducing with each other using a technology similar to this. The downside to this is that they have to become lesbians. However, for those who does not like to have sex with another women, there are dildo’s and high-tech sex machines available for them. This is an evolutionary process. Pure reproductive perfection would be to have only one sex without the need for the other. Unfortunately, it is the women’s organs that can handle this feat. This is because women are the foundation of human life, a Godly process if not already a GOD. There is no human alive who has not entered this world through the female. Females give life, men do not. Sure men provide the sperm where life forms but here’s a little hypothesis: If women produce life then suffice it to say that they must carry the genetic substance required to make it. If you look at a fetus in it’s early embryonic stage, you will see that it resembles a female. The clitoris turns into a penis if the right male chromosome is activated. If not, then it is simply a clitoris which all women have. Women are the foundation of life and having the need for men to produce sperm, in order to create embryos, may very well be an imperfection of the the human kind. Perhaps, through evolution the human species will become perfected and the need for male sperm may be a thing of the past. And if it is, so will sex.

The reason a male is needed is because it’s an issue of tooling, a woman just doesnt have the right gear to get another pregenant.
Females have 1 half of the chromosomes needed to produce a fetus, males have the other half. The reason this is done by halves is so that genetic material can be shared, diversity is truely the best protection against any attack.
If a female could reproduce on her own then of course the offspring would be clone as there would not be any alternate genetic material to offset the offsprings genetic material.
Some one made a comment about a fetus resembling a female in its early stages, and that the clitoris developes into a penis if the Y chromosome is present.
Well the template (young fetus) is the female body, why look at it like this? It’s more of a comparison that the female body is the template. The clitoris serves no real purpose beyond stimulation, and thats because its actually an undeveloped penis.
So really the female body is an alternatively developed male body and vice versa, there is really no one set gender than serves as the template, the template is it’s own.
If the human racer were to develope to the point of reproduction with out a partner, then it would resemble the female body, but there would be no females either.
Also a related topic, the male Y chromosome has an inverse replicate of itself adjacent to it, this is because the female body is hostile to intrusive bodies (i.e., the cold virus, or any other virus / bacteria), and the Y chromosome get’s attacked by the white blood cells, so it has the ability to disguise its genetic material and reconstruct it.
Even through this lack of gratitude, we still produce both Y and X equally out of fairness :)

Females are superior because they represent the entire human being. The male is inferior because he is, from a very real genetic standpoint, an incomplete copy of a female. He is a derivative, subhuman mutation, designed for sexual reproduction. After providing sperm, he’s quite disposable, and our society shows this in many ways.
Second, there IS significant difference between the chromsomes, namely that the Y chromosome is smaller and contains markedly fewer genetic components than the X. Y is in fact a mutated version of X. It is a derivative of X.
The Female chromosome sequence contains far more genetic data than the male’s.
The Y chromosome is in fact degrading and in trouble, because it does not build or repair itself with each generation. It is in fact an exact copy of the previous father’s Y. That how we can trace lineage in men reliably through past generations.

It’s amazing what a article will do to society, when you want to change the exsistense of human nature, if you look in between the lines, it says this was just AN EXPERIMENT. It doesn’t meant that the federal government will give it’s blessing on this but, I know if the GLBT can have that chance to give it a go, the MEN AND WOMEN all over would be upset that such a thing could exist,so since it really is still in the study stage everyone chill…

Kinda crazy how a silly little tall tale that I started way back in highschool is now a reality.
The future will have no men. Women will grow weary of men and shortly after learning to clone (which is essentially what they’re doing, whether they use so many words or not). And soon enough the age of Man will be no more.
Men will be obsolete.

Great. So now we’re playing “creator”. I’m sure there is a reason why men and women were made sodifferently and to play different roles in life. What is the purpose of this research? Are men in danger of becoming extinct? Actually the war against man has been increasing ever since the 60s so this shouldn’t be a surprise.
