“2007 will likely be near equal with 2006, so joint sixth warmest year,” Phil Jones, head of the Climatic Research Unit at Britain’s University of East Anglia, said.

The World Meteorological Organization had originally predicted this year to be the warmest year on record. The reason for the cooler temperatures is associated with a shorter El Nino than expected.

Global warming is believed by the majority of scientists to be to blame for the record temperatures.

Temperatures are expected to make it the 9th warmest year on record in the U.S.
