+ ENLARGE (because size matters)

For obvious reasons you can’t recycle a condom, but have you ever wondered which countries “tax” sex the most?

Well… Environmental Graffiti has decided to create a detailed graphical diagram, complete with wallpaper download for your viewing pleasure. The data, which gives the average condom price around the world has been compiled from UK price comparison site pricerunner and a blogger from an interesting little site called condomunity. We thought we’d go one step further however, and create a graphic representation of the findings – I think you’ll agree the graph makes for ‘interesting’ viewing.

When looking at it, please don’t deduce that bar heights are correlated to penis size (that’s just offensive).

Shanghai came out the cheapest with an average price of just $4.50 (£2.25), whilst Ireland was the country where sex costs the most (!) at almost $18 (£9) on average for a pack – (perhaps due to the hostility of the Catholic Church towards contraception?). Prices within the US showed a high amount of variation, from $9.50 (£4.75) in Houston to nearly $15 (£7.50) in New York – feel free to extrapolate from that what you wish…

Condoms can’t be recycled and as such may be considered damaging to the environment. And the solution offered for most things that either cannot be recycled or damage the environment? Tax. Petrol, plastic bags (soon), driving in central London, all cost at a premium. But putting a price on sex? Well that’s just cheap…

  1. Andy Says:

How big of a pack are these prices for?

  2. Old joke Says:

    They can too be recycled!

You just shake the fuck out of them.

    :)

  3. Sommer Says:

Okay, the title got my attention and the information is….intresting. Hmmmm? Not sure what to say other than, thank goodness I’m married and don’t have to buy condoms and worry about the cost. Phew!

  4. Jonny_Nabb Says:

Are the prices of condoms different in England, Scotland and Wales, or are you so stupid that you think England is the United Kingdom?

  5. WellHungDubliner Says:

Being from Ireland, I can tell you that it’s less to do with the Catholic Church, and more to do with the general cost of living. There was a time when people cared what the Catholic Church had to say on the subject in Ireland – and that was about 20 years ago. _In general_, the only people who listen to what they have to say on the subject nowadays are people aged 45+, and chances are, they wouldn’t need contraceptives anyway. It’s definitely a reflection on how things have changed in Ireland, and if you want an example of how money can change a culture (for better or worse), look no further.

  6. Anonymouse Says:

This assumes that the involved parties use a condom… ;)

  7. Willy Brown Balls Says:

It’s true alright, the price of condoms in Ireland is ridiculous, as well as the price of everything else. It’s been a while since anyone gave a toss about religion here, or at least I hope it is so I don’t think the catholic church has any say in it. We are completely ripped off here in Ireland and it simply boils down to greed. Besides that condoms should be given out for free or else bought from another country on ebay.

  8. Mario Says:

I think that’s not the average condom price but average 12-condom-pack price. Isn’t it?

  9. Fran Says:

Each condom?????? I’m, going to travel to Shangai… and exports it, jijiji

  10. Graham Says:

It’s right that condoms in the UK cost that much from a store, but you can get them free from doctors, hospitals, universities and pretty much anywhere associated with the NHS.

  11. Ross Says:

    emm… a 3 pack of comdoms costs about €5 in Ireland. I call BS…

  12. marcus Says:

I think that chart actually represents penis size. Marcus from Ireland.

  13. ThaiMed Says:

The amount of tax on such a natural act is shocking, but the same applies to most forms of contraception.

  14. teabag Says:

Condoms are free in NYC… unless you want fancy ones.

  15. Alexandre Says:

This makes no sense, its 3.5$ in canada for a pack.

  16. Vanyel Says:

Another person is a helluva lot worse for the environment than a condom (or even 10) is…

  17. fsa Says:

    fdsa

  18. Take a piss Says:

Are the prices of condoms different in England, Scotland and Wales, or are you so stupid that you think England is the United Kingdom?

No, just that Scotland and Wales aren’t worth a shit.. NOBODY CARES ABOUT YOU!

  19. me Says:

HEI I LIVE IN PORTUGAL AND CONDOMS ARE EXPENSIVE SO I HAVE BABIES INSTEAD!!!!!

  20. Groggory Says:

Religion in everyday Ireland is taking a back seat. To be honest, the way the country is going in the last decade, we are in major trouble. A recession is taking place here in Ireland and because of the fooked up high prices that we paid for stuff in Ireland and with the call by the small business organisations to CUT the minimum wage, we are up shite creek without a paddle.

Its not because of the church, it because of the RIP OFF IRELAND nature that has us by the balls for the last few years. It’s not just johnny’s, it’s EVERYTHING!

  21. Vijay Says:

In India condoms are much more cheaper around 2 Rupees(INR)
    India Rupees 1 INR = 0.0231817 USD

  22. anon Says:

Okay, the title got my attention and the information is….intresting. Hmmmm? Not sure what to say other than, thank goodness I’m married and don’t have to buy condoms and worry about the cost. Phew!

you must not be getting laid

  23. don fernão Says:

In Brazil it’s less than a dollar for a condom. Maybe that’s why our AIDS infection rate has dropped down so strong and quickly in few years.

  24. Simon Says:

@Mario etc. The prices are for a Durex Elite 12 pack. You will find cheaper condoms in almost every country, however Durex is the only brand that has almost global coverage. I got to know, I’ve compiled the cheap condoms, expensive condoms list here;)

  25. dickbutt Says:

Are the prices of condoms different in England, Scotland and Wales, or are you so stupid that you think England is the United Kingdom?

Are you a dumb faggot? Yes.

  26. Lithuanianguy Says:

:D In Lithuania condoms cost like from 1 to 3 dollars

  27. Ciaran Says:

it’s so expensive in Ireland because we’re one of the richest countries in the world.

plus i’ve never seen a pack of condoms cost more than $8.

  28. System Error 51 Says:

Not true – I live in Ireland and a pack of condoms (doesn’t matter which brand) costs around 6 Euros or so, at least last time I checked.

  29. Xyxox Says:

Just to clarify again, The Catholic church has absolutely no bearing on life in Ireland anymore. The country’s only religious in the eyes of other countries.

  30. Anthony Says:

I think that chart actually represents penis size. Marcus from Ireland.

I’m sure not! :) In my country you can buy a pack of three (decent) condoms for about $2 USD.

  31. Nicolas Says:

In Argentina the price is 1.5 dollars in average for a pack of three

  32. John O'Brien Says:

I’m from Ireland. This is why every 16 year old slag here is pregnant.

  33. Jimbob Says:

Are the prices of condoms different in England, Scotland and Wales, or are you so stupid that you think England is the United Kingdom?

England IS the United Kingdom. Wales and Scotland are just “reserves”, expensive reserves at that as they steal half our damn taxes :P

  34. Jake Says:

Are the prices of condoms different in England, Scotland and Wales, or are you so stupid that you think England is the United Kingdom?

Are you stupid enough to not realize that if he says England, he means England? If he meant Scotland and Wales and England, he would have said that… or UK. Jeez.

  35. .:GeO:. Says:

You forget México $7.00 Mexican pesos per unit not pack

  36. George Says:

This study neglected one important country. Japan. I bought the cheapest box available in po-dunk-ville the other day for 20$. The average price when they aren’t on sale is 30-40$ and if you go designer to impress (which apparently many Japanese men do) then it’s upwards of 100$ a box.

Japanese have a clinch on crazy expensive sex.

  37. M Says:
Are the prices of condoms different in England, Scotland and Wales, or are you so stupid that you think England is the United Kingdom?

No, just that Scotland and Wales aren’t worth a shit.. NOBODY CARES ABOUT YOU!

    What about Northern Ireland?

  38. Fin Says:

The high price of condoms in Ireland is nothing to do with religion, it’s just high cost of living and highish taxes. Religion’s got no say in it.

  39. dude Says:

just do it in da butt!

  40. skimd1965 Says:

you can get condoms free in the uk of the NHS was this taken in to account when working out the prices and in most pubs there 50p to £1.00 is this the same in most countys…. so you can have sex for free or very little if using a condom ….?

  41. Xhristy Says:

As an Irish guy I can say that condom are way too expensive here. The reason the tax is so high is because everything in Ireland is highly taxed. But also because we are the both the most expensive country in the Eu and the richest

But you are missing one large piece of information.
Condom are given out for free everywhere. Mainly in college/university but also in family planning centers and so on.

  42. Michelle Says:

Nothing to do with the church, my ass. Everything to do with sexuality or the lack thereof in Ireland has something to do with the church. You think the fact we have no abortion has nothing to do with the church? You think the fact that we can’t get the Morning After pill without going grovelling to a GP has nothing to do with the church?

Yeah, ok, things are expensive here. But if the church didn’t have the government by the balls, perhaps condoms wouldn’t be slapped with a luxury tax rate. Or slightly less than luxury since February…

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/northern_ireland/7221807.stm

  43. Alan Says:

The figures used may no longer be accurate.
Also it helps to shop around.

Condoms were taxed as luxury items with a substantial markup in V.A.T. (sales tax). There were some small campaigns which aimed to point out any tax gains were offset by health care costs that would be better served by removing the tax. The tax on condoms and other contraceptives was not removed but cut in half.

  44. Ripoffireland Says:

total agree about the comment about Ireland and it’s Ripped off culture! EVERYTHING IS EXPENSIVE! living cost, food, transport, college fee’s! you name it we are the “Most expensive place to live in europe and if not the world!” we are in serious trouble as the government doesn’t care a hell about it, as long as they get their pay at the end of the week, pint and a bullshit girl to shage thats all they care! And this is a good example,

I don’t live in Ireland because of some of these factors, they say Irish people are nice, easy going, etc… 20years ago, but now, it’s different. Everyone is just too full of them selves about money and life in general.

I hope this article gets talked on the Radio and paper in Ireland

  45. Robyn Says:

I would imagine that some of the cheaper prices can be attributed to buying the basic “rubber” while some of the higher prices can be attributed to condoms with “extras” like colour and texture.

  46. 365 Reasons I quit HIV Says:

Are the prices of condoms different in England, Scotland and Wales, or are you so stupid that you think England is the United Kingdom?

Why are you so rude? The data source lists only England which means that Wales and Scotland are not included.

  47. Andy Says:

I get my condoms for 10 cents each. I don’t see why you would pay anywhere near $1/each.

  48. Max Says:

Are the prices of condoms different in England, Scotland and Wales, or are you so stupid that you think England is the United Kingdom?

An amazing amount of hostility considering the source article (a UK news source) says England. Do your research before you post your idiotic nonsense.

  49. bing Says:

Why didn’t you include the cost of the pints as well?

  50. Rich Says:

This is for a box of Durex Elite 12 pack. So most places are paying less than a buck per…uhhhmmm….session.

  51. Eric H Says:

Who says they can’t be recycled? Just turn ‘em inside out and use the other side.

  52. Puppybeard Says:

Ireland might be a rich country on average, but the fact is that for most people under 25, you don’t feel rich. I know I don’t. €18 for condoms stings your pocket like a bastard.

There are lost of rich people in Ireland though, and that drives inflation up, whether you have the money or not. We also have really bad consumer apathy, along with our social and political apathy. People just don’t make a fuss when they’re getting ripped off here, it’s mental.

And, even though we’re legally secular, we’re not practically secular, and one of the reasons people would be unwilling to engage in a debate on the topic of over-priced contraception in Ireland is that it’s still a topic a lot of people get embarrassed about. And yes, if a woman complained about the price of condoms a lot of people would call her a slut.

Add that to that the fact that abortion is illegal in Ireland (how are we not a Catholic country in this context) and it transpires that condoms really are the last line of defense for the majority of young Irish people. That’ll drive the price up too.

Ok, there’s the morning-after pill. A girl has to go to a doctor and get a PRESCRIPTION for the morning after pill. And free contraception doesn’t exist. We’re a really progressive country all right. No Church influence at all.

  53. Puppybeard Says:

All that said; speaking positively, Ireland is a country where girls buy their own drink.

I’m told that in Shanghai when you ask a girl out to dinner, she brings her friends and you pay for everybody. So maybe dating in Shanghai isn’t such an easy ride?

  54. Bradleykun Says:

In May 2007 I visited a ‘Condomania!’ store in Tokyo, and priced a 12-pack box of my normal brand, Trojan Magnum, at ¥5,000 (~$47). Who would have known that large-sized condoms would be considered a novelty item in Japan? ;)

  55. Markus Says:

one reason for condoms being relatively cheap in Shanghai/China is certainly, that the living cost and wages in general are much lower compared to other mentioned places, the other more important one is, that the government is giving condoms to married couples for free in order to support their the One-Child-Policy

  56. jason Says:

Where’s Canada or Montreal in all this?

  57. Screwy Says:

46 comments in of Irish people doing the usual fucking protesting about not having Church interference before someone speaks the glaring truth.

  58. Screwy Says:

Failing that, she has to go book a return flight to England, Holland, Czech Republic etc, organize a hotel – etc, just to get an abortion?

Yeah, we’re such a forward and cosmopolitan country.

Can’t even get a taxi here without having to stare at pictures of Padre fucking Pio.

  59. R. Mecha Says:

Although I’m sure the prices are accurate for England, it’s not entirely accurate when you consider the fact that all birth control is free on the NHS. Just ask your GP, or sexual health clinic, and they’ll give you condoms for free, in addition to the pill, the coil, diaphragm, etc.. etc..

  60. Condom Girl Says:

are these shop or online prices? I don’t know if it’s the change in USD:GBP, but I (www.condomgirl.co.uk) sell to the UK and $14 (in £) would be very expensive for any pack of 12 – I customers pay about half of that!

  61. john Says:

haha to the guy who said shake the fuck outa them
