Walls of Death were where it was at in the amusement parks of the early 1900s, though it seems the spectacle of motorcycles and cars thundering loudly around the vertical face of a giant wooden barrel wasn’t danger enough for the crowds of the time. They needed something extra bonkers in their entertainment – not to mention an added roaring noise – and were duly provided with it in a version known as The Liondrome.

Here, each driver was joined on their distinctly precarious ride by the king of beasts sitting dutifully next to them in a sidecar. They weren’t quite crazy enough to have the lions in the passenger seat, for fear of having their heads bitten off. Then again, driving this dangerous would turn any passenger into a bit of an animal.

To learn more about the fearless ladies who kept these lions as companions and see loads more incredible pics, rev on over to DRB’s Walls of Death.
