FYI Greenpeace is not an extremist group. Non violent civil disobedience can hardly be classified as extremist. In 1985 the Rainbow Warrior entered into the waters surrounding Moruroa atoll, site of French nuclear testing. The sinking of the Rainbow Warrior occurred when the French government secretly bombed the ship in Auckland harbour on orders from François Mitterrand himself. This killed Dutch freelance photographer Fernando Pereira, who thought it was safe to enter the boat to get his photographic material after a first small explosion, but drowned as a result of a second, larger explosion. The attack was a public relations disaster for France after it was quickly exposed by the New Zealand police. The French Government in 1987 agreed to pay New Zealand compensation of NZ$13 million and formally apologised for the bombing. The French Government also paid ?2.3 million compensation to the family of the photographer.
The ship that was scuttled was The Rainbow Warrior II.

What a joke… you count groups that are working on different issues with extremely different tactics as all the same group? And somehow mainstream corporate greenpeace gets rated as more extreme than Earth First!? AND you claim the ALF grew out of EF!? Actually it started in England and grew out of The Band of Mercy. You might want to buy a clue or at least do your homework first next time!

And whoever mentioned Sea Shepherd, I was going to include them but I was too lazy ;)

VHEMT is only number four? Maybe a Volunteer should infiltrate a sperm bank and unplug the freezer to increase our extremist rating. (Just kidding). A minor clarification on the Earth First! mention: The attempted car bomb assassination of Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney was in Oakland, California. They were successfully uniting loggers and environmentalists against eco-terrorist corporations which were falling ancient redwood trees. When they didn't die, they were arrested for carrying explosives.

These are all decentralized “organizations” comprised of anonymous autonomous cells. Membership is self-proclaimed. Physically they are not related in any way. There are key philosophical differences, somoe of which are summarized in the article. So do they qualify as being “related”? To about the same degree that Humphrey Bogart was related to Princess Diana. They were 7th cousins.
