okay, let's get this straight. theres a difference between the most DEADLIEST animals and the animals that carry the most POTENT venom or poison. so far from watching years of animal planet and discovery channel and reading hours of worth of shit on the web i came up with this
MOST POTENT VENOMS
snake-inland taipan.
spider-funnel web.
sea dwelling-the cone snail
THE MOST POISONESS ANIMAL IS THE DART FROG. THIS IS #1 OUT OF EVERYTHING.
the eastern brown or aussi coast sea snake is second.
the box jellyfish also has a very active and strong venom.
it's really hard to explain this. i recently saw something that this doctor took human cells put them in little vials and put drops of the most potent venom. if i remember correctly the box jelly fish venom killed 100% of the heart sells within 10 minutes.while i believe the taipan did around 60%/ sorry if it's not that accurate.

Just an FYI, but the most venomous animal on the planet is the marbled cone snail. Yes...you heard right, a snail. It has the most complex, and deadliest venom of all animals.

Venomous vs Poisonous.

Atrax robustus is venomous but if you licked it (assuming it didnt envenomate you) you would be fine.

Poison arrow frog is poisonous, if it bit you, you would be fine, if you licked it...you would be in serious trouble.

Venomous organisms have a venom delivery system (like a fang) that is used to deliver a toxic compund into your blood stream and (usually) cause ion channels like calcium and pottasium to either shut down completley or open up completley (either one is really bad news).

Furthermore..there are two kinds of Venomous Animals. Active and Passive. Activley Venomous animals envenomate their prey and often have fangs...think snakes.
Passivley Venomous animals envenomate in defense and usually have spines..think stone fish.

Comparisons of venomness (for lack of a better word) are usually conducted on Rats and Mice and are called LD50s.

According to LD50s Box Jelly Fish (Chorinex flekeri) are without a doubt the MOST venomous animal in the Ocean and certainly the most Dangerous sea creature in Tropical AsutralAsia in Summer. BUT these LD50s are conducted on Rats...not too many Rats I know inhabit the Tropical Australian Ocean.....

Atrax Robustus (Sydney Funnel Web)is "NOT" the most venomous spider according to LD50s on Rats, that nasty little Brazilian sucker is...

but Atrax robustus IS the MOST venomous spider according to LD50s on PRIMATES (monkeys)....(hmmm a monkey eating spider in sydney???) It just so happens that Humans are primates so if one was to get approval from an ethics board to do some LD50s on humans...which do you think would win?

Australian Snakes: The Inland Taipan is without a doubt the single most venomous snake on earth closely followed by Brown Snake and Coastal Taipan (mind you NO ONE has ever died from an Inland Taipan bite). These three snakes have a venom that will cause consumptive coagulapthy...which means it will use up all an animal's Coagulation chemicals then all the blodd that isnt clotted will just drain out of every orifice...EVERY Orifice...but thats only in mammals (Just so happens Humans are mammals)

But all these animals have venoms designed to "Kill" thier prey...Boring!! Whats really - really - really cool are wasps that paralyse their prey, take it home lay eggs on it...some weeks to months their larvae hatches and eats the prey item (usually a spider of catepillar) ALIVE!!!! This is where the story behind Alien comes from! But think about that...they keep the prey alive for extende periods of time...the prey has no food, no water, but stays alive....HOW DOES IT DO IT????? And if that wasn't cool enough there are other wasps that will come along, find the spider with the 1st wasps larvae in it and wasp #2 will lay its egg INSIDE wasp egg #1!!!!! OH MY GOD...HOW UNREAL IS THAT!!!! If God was real he must have been one twisted individual to come up with that!

Anyway sorry back to venoms.....extended paralysis is much harder and complicated to produce than death...

But the real question that you guys should be asking is "Why" these animals are SO venomous??? Why does the Taipan need such an insane venom just to take out a couple of little rodent sized marsupials?
Well the most popular theory is that Australia has a low prey density therefor the snake needs to make a guarantee kill. Also the foraging Ecology of Australian Elapid snakes is different from American Vipers....Vipers are ambush predators who sit and wait until something sweet and juicy walks past before they pounce, bite once and let go, then they track down their dying prey item...Elapid snakes are active predators who hunt down their cute and furries for dinner....bite and hold on until said prey is dead.....so there is some talk that the Aussie snakes need a stronger venom to kill the prey as soon as possible to reduce harm to themselves....

But personally I dont agree with any of those theories...

This site is inaccurate. It says that the Inland Taipan is the most venomous snake in the world, when actually the Sea Snake is.
