“We’re letting them smoke if they want to smoke,” one policeman said with a chuckle and a shrug. “The city gave them a permit.”
Yes, yesterday marked the Toronto celebrations of the 10th Global Marijuana March; an annual rally, campaigning for the decriminalization and a celebration of cannabis. The march takes place in over two hundred cities around the world. However, the biggest and best part is in Toronto, where lenient cannabis laws married with political pressure from liberals has mushroomed the size of the event.
Literally thousands of potheads of all ages took to the streets. The protest was noisy: people shouted slogans such as “free the weed,” motorists honked their horns in approval and huge wafts of Marijuana smoke perfumed the air.
Police presence was barely evident – there were only a few officers surrounding the park and controlling the flow of people.
It’s not really surprising that this was the case. Everyone seems to be pretty confused on the whole issue. In Canada. marijuana is not only used for medical purposes, but the liberal government tried to decriminalize it in 2006. Unfortunately the conservatives stepped in (as usual) and quashed the bill.
One can only hope that once the smoke settles, a definitive stance is reached either way because it isn’t healthy to leave issues hanging in the air.
We’d love to hear your opinion on the issue and if any of you attended the march it would be great to hear some of your stories!

Those marches would also be active in Rio and 9 other Brazilian cities, but most of them were judicially denied.

It’s unfortunate the Conservatives are so stuck on their hardcore right-wing agenda. Especially towards drugs such as cannabis which is definitely not the demon weed Stephen Harper makes it out to be. Slipping in right-wing marijuana laws into Bill C-26 and then bullying the Liberals with threats of an election in order to get this through to the Senate just shows how sneaky the Conservatives can be on this. Their ignorance towards marijuana is just remarkable. Studies have countlessly shown that incarceration is not the answer, and that decriminalization and education is the solution. Just look to the Netherlands. I don’t see their country running around murdering each other screaming “Demon Weed”. They actually have less use there than we do here. People just need to do their own research and stop being influenced by the media and the ultra right-wings. Think for yourself people!

This conservative government is so draconian that they are becoming dangerous, if they feel it is necessary to jail someone for having as little as one marijuana plant, for 6 months , than we must be living in the stone ages. An election is in order and I certainly hope the Liberals are not actively supporting laws that have already been dismal failures in the U.S. Mr Dion, show the people what your party stands for, and with the majority of the people understandably upset over Bills like C-26, show your support, we need to know who we should vote for.
