The reasons vary from "because they had serpent tattoos on their arms" to "because some of the priests were called Adders". There was even a cute song by Isaac Bonewitz that was popular in the 90s called "Bring Back the Snakes". (Not the serious one you can find the lyrics to, a parody.)
