Actually the idea of protecting wildlife, or at least treating it with respect, dated to far before that. It&#039;s at least mentioned in some hindu texts long before Ashoka&#039;s reign. For a more &quot;scholarly&quot; discussion of ashoka you can check out an environmental history timeline which can be found somewhere on http://www.radford.edu/ (i&#039;ve lost the link or i&#039;d send the full one). Some limited googling should turn up plenty more on king ashoka and his pillars. They&#039;re fairly well known and well translated.</description>
