It's at least mentioned in some hindu texts long before Ashoka's reign. For a more "scholarly" discussion of ashoka you can check out an environmental history timeline which can be found somewhere on http://www.radford.edu/ (i've lost the link or i'd send the full one). Some limited googling should turn up plenty more on king ashoka and his pillars. They're fairly well known and well translated. @ john k
