why don,t they use a barometer, the atmospheric pressure is the easiest way to find out, the lower you go the higher the pressure gets telling you how far down you are.

Ok, I am a caver, I thrive in caves and the underground.. its kind of like a crack addict.. with crack.. but its cave addict with cave. There are a few things I should mention. 1) caves are dangerous places - they do not care if you die in them. 2) When death of human in a cave happens, the access to that cave is put at risk, and access to that cave system by qualified cavers is potentially limited.
3) No 2 caves are the same, each has their own challenges. Depth is a major challenge, both physically and mentally. It also requires great skill to navigate as caves are DARK, DAMP, SLICK, can be COLD, and WET, oh and 3D mazes -which can be very confined spaces with painful access.
TO GET THE TOTAL DEPTH OF A CAVE you can use an altimeter or the Declination Readings of a Clinometer (shows inclination and declination) of a cave.. this is used to compute real length using triangulation (trig) and thus with a good survey using Compass, Clinometer and Fiberglass Survey Tape you can achieve a very accurate survey of the cave. This is most helpful in finding out stats on the cave and helping cavers find their way back to the surface.
THE NSS or National Speleological Society ..caves.org is a great place to get more info on caves and join a local caving group or grotto.
NEVER CAVE ALONE, ALWAYS TELL OTHERS WHERE YOU HAVE GONE< and when to expect you back, LEAVE EMERGENCY NUMBERS - ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET - HAVE AT LEAST 3 backup forms of light. GET EXPERT ADVICE BEFORE YOU TRY IT --- its a very dangerous sport and it is not for everyone. Hope that helps.

How do they determine the depth? Do they have some kind of gauge that they use? Obviously as mentioned, gps type devices would never work.

Obviously they cant just determine it by the length of rope they use or something because they move lateral.

I am maybe missing the obvious here, but it seems like it would be hard to figure out.

Edgar Rice Burroughs has long ago proved that a John Carter-like character has wormed his way down to the center of the earth in a giant screw machine. And you can't get any deeper than the center, just as you can't get deeper into a forest than the center. So, what's all the fuss about?

your mom’s butthole is way deeper.

Usually, morons whose limitations far exceed their curiosity (that would be you) would have long since moved on to dumber and more superficial sites before reaching here. How did you get here? Did your mutt forget to log off your computer last night, or were you googling "Dumbist" and typo'd "Deepest"?
