WaldenAmbrose says:

Actually, the Maya did not say that 2012 would be the end of the world, but rather the end of a cycle. Many other civilizations (the Kaliyuga cycles of the Hindus, the prophecies of the Hopi) also say that this period we are living in is the end of some epoch or cycle of time, but not the end of the world.

In our apocalypse-obsessed society, as exemplified by this artist and movies like 2012 or the day after tommorrow, we can't seem to make the rather large distinction between a final, total end, and a cyclical change that leaves some elements to die, while others are renewed or reborn as something better.

2012 is what we make it. We can continue to ogle over apocalypse porn and allow the wars and other disasters to unfold unimpeded, or we can recognize the opportunity for a far better way of life that can be created out of the crises we now face.
