Carbon offsetting helps to limit the amount of new carbon pollution added to the environment. This offsetting is accomplished by not producing carbon pollution in the amount of carbon credits purchased. Using this type of pollution control can help to keep new levels of pollution lower, though it cannot remove existing levels of pollution from the environment.

This form of pollution control is not enough to be the only solution to increasing environmental pressure from carbon production. Other steps and methods must be used in order to reduce existing pollution and prevent new pollution from being created. Using clean burning fuels or alternative fuels offers an efficient and effective way to keep from adding to the ongoing problem of pollution.

In order to correct the problems with carbon offsetting, more locations need to be used as sources for reduced pollution. Moving them to more local sources allows eco-conscious residents to see the change being made through purchasing carbon credits. Combining this with recycling and green changes to daily life can have a greater impact than offsetting alone.
