Russians Live Underground For A Year, Decide It’s Not That Different

Green living

For half of a year, a cult expecting the end of the world had been hiding in an underground bunker in a remote area of Russia– that is, until recently, when 14 of the group decided that the fourth partial collapse of their structure was a sign from God to return to the surface.

The cult members, who are in seclusion, having opted to remain in a state of prayer until Orthodox Easter on the 27th, left behind fourteen more members who as of yet have not been persuaded to come out. The group that remains claims that if police try to remove them by force that they will detonate gas canisters within the structure; it’s unknown if those still underground include any children, although two young girls were among the adherents opting to leave.

Seriously, somebody’s got to explain the allure of this all to me– you’re stuck underground with 28 people for six months, waiting for the world to end, it doesn’t, and it takes until the fourth partial cave-in before you think “gee, something may be wrong?” Obviously police can’t force this group out, and the fact that the ones that left are in good health says something positive about the preparation that went into this project, but really? Underground for six months, and didn’t think at all about coming up? Really?
