I find it hard to believe that people frighten the birds away by making noise. I've travelled around China - there's very little birdsong because there are very few birds. Why? The Chinese eat them. They're often sold roasted on little skewers, three of four at a time, on little pavement stalls.

The Chinese eat anything. Literally. I've seen it in their markets - sea horses, snake, scorpions...

"This scares them into flying, and people keep it up until the birds literally drop dead of exhaustion from being unable to rest."

Awesome idea. Then, if there aren't enough birds anymore to eat the pests in the crops, the crop fails and they can have themselves a nice big famine that kills a few tens of millions of people.
It's not as if they haven't done it before.
