The health effects of GM foods may be unknown but the consequences of allowing Monsanto and the like to effectively end diversity and monopolize our seed strains would be catastrophic.

Genetically altered foods may not have the same disease-fighting characteristics as their organic counterparts. Those characteristics were compromized, I suspect, for economic reasons. I choose to grow my own open-pollinated tomatoes. I believe that these are richer in Lycopene, which reduces the risk of cancer. And while I can't prove it, at least I know that my tomatoes are better tasting than anything you'll buy from the grocery store. And if store-bought tomatoes taste like cardboard, it's likely that my concerns are justified. To keep greedy corporations like Monsanto from forcing their frankencrops on me, I'll keep saving seeds from my own organic plants.
