Man, some of these are really ingenious. One of the most simple cooling devices is called a swamp cooler, and is still in use today. In a nutshell, it consists of a fan blowing across a curtain of water. These are used a lot in the southwest, in part because they also serve to humidify the air.

Enjoyed the post. Just thought I’d note that water and air contain chemicals … and the use of water for cooling does indeed have an environmental footprint. Especially where I live in Australia.
