Sci-fi buffs will know that the long anticipated environmental disaster movie, The Day the Earth Stood Still is now upon us. It’s a remake of the original 1950s version, but with today’s CG capabilities is bound to entertain just as much, if not more.

For those unfamiliar with the movie, it’s about an eco-savvy alien robot, Klaatu who comes to the Earth to warn its inhabitants of impending doom if they all don’t chill out, stop killing each other and get along. His mission is to make sure the galaxy is as peace-loving as possible. Of course, the pesky Earthlings love nothing more than a good fight so it proves more difficult than they thought. Klaatu is shot almost immediately so his trusty indestructible robot side-kick, Gort has to step up to the post. And he starts to go about getting Earth’s meddling residents squared away in the most awesome ways.

I'm not sure about the new version, but the robot is called Gort (I think) & there is nothing particularly eco-anything about Gort, effectively he's an very powerful enforcer. Apparently, the rest of Universe is a bit concerned that us earthlings will spread our barbaric behavior off planet (1950's = war with A-bombs). The humanoid visitor (a policeman/envoy of sorts) warns us to stop or Gort will stop us, possibly by destroying the whole planet (which is what he's been designed to do). So, the only thing that was green in the original movie.. was the tanks & weapons as Gort vaporised them. :)

i am a big sci-fi fan. *I think that sci-fi often allows us to explore our greatest fears without the political polarization that accompanies less creative attempts. However, I think I will avoid this movie. It was a classic message to America engaged in a witch hunt for communists that our xenophobia and cold war fears were childish and unjustified. Although the message certainly applies today I'm not sure that the CGI helps bring that message home. It seems that this movie is just another attempt to capitalize on the eco-focus of late. I hope I am wrong and that this is a remarkable update that speaks as well to close-minded people today as it did in the past. Of course, this best news is that is could spawn another great cult classic as the original spawned the Evil Dead trilogy. Klaatu barada nikto forever!
