Great photo essay. as an Indian, it always gives me pride to read about these lost cities of India, lol. My fave is the Vittala temple. That bare tree is so beautiful. Just a dumb question but is that related to the myth of vetalas (vampires) in Hindi mythology? I think I read somewhere that vetalas hang from dead trees, so...

@Sonia: Good collection. I thought you would include Taxila / Nalanda etc. They are lost (and found) universities by I am sure they were surrounded by cities :)

Thanks for the wonderful post!
Several important monuments were distroyed by invasions. Indian government should atleast try to preserve the existing ruins until its too late.

There are many more cities which were lost in the time. India was very prosperous and culturally far ahead from West from time immemorial !!

There is another place called Ellora !! And massive great Hindu temple.

Hampi is an excellent place to visit. I visited the place in March this year and thoroughly enjoyed the place. The weather is pretty hot but its a great place to explore and the landscape is excellent. The boulders and ruins that you see all over the place really make you sit back and take notice.

Here are some of my own pics take a look if you are interested.

Quote "Sangama dynasty princes Harihara I and Bukka Raya I founded Vijayanagara in 1336. This mighty city was the capital of an empire of the same name, one of the largest superpowers in Hindu history. The golden years of this Indian realm lasted about 20 years, from 1509-29"

I don't understand the statement about the golden year of this city, 20 years is not even a generation, how can they be considered a "golden age"...could they even build a house in that time???
