Literally FASCINATING!! I'd be quite interested in going were I to venture to Paris anytime soon. And I do dream of doing that.

Is that Don Wildman (From the Cities of the underworld program) in picture 9? I love that show, hopefully they'll make some more series!!

Mitch (not verified) says:

Publishing this is irresponsible and is bound to get unwitting cataphiles more heat from the police than they already do. Not to mention that publishing these photos is bound to lead to more enforcement in these areas, and more sealed/monitored entrances. Thanks a lot.

How does one find out about this?
are there many other societies and underground systems elsewhere in the world?

I love Paris - and Im a Brit. Not quite as galling for subterranean tour interests in Paris, there is "Les Egouts de Paris" - the Paris Sewer Tour ! Seriously, over 1500km of sewerage tunnels, including power cables, water pipes and also the inevitable content, Im afraid. These tunnels are huge and absolutely fascinating - and the system is over 250 years old, designed to rid Paris of the plagues that were infesting the city by pollution of the Seine. Oddly enough the entrance to the Sewer Tour is opposite the Bateaux Mouche terminal between Eiffel Tower and the Musee D'Orsay. I do have a 4 minute audio piece from my Travel Bishop radio series about the tunnels if anyone is interested.

I did the official tour years ago and it was good. For sure you get more thrill going on the unauthorized parts but for a claustrophobic like me ... ;)

@Mitch. Over-reaction and paranoia, perhaps? The police are more than aware of what's going on in those caves - they've known for many years. If they cared so much, there would be far more policing now to keep it under control. The truth of the matter is, they've got better things to do than track down cataphiles in underground tunnels!

Even underground Paris remains the coolest place on earth. Great article. I really enjoyed it. Haven't had the heart to venture forth myself but, being the adventurous type, you never know.

JL (not verified) says:

I had heard about the underground raves... But I didn't know about the human remains. How freaky, and fascinating at the same time!! I do agree that this article could draw more heat from the police, but regardless it's great of you to have documented this. Unreal...

i have heard about the undergrounds but i never thought that there were body remainders of bodies.....that is totally cool and freaky
