Environmental Graffiti wouldn’t be what it is today without the wonderful images provided by our readers and the public. For that we say, thank you. There are some amazingly talented snappers out there who we think could cut it with the big boys, and so we thought our new venture might be of interest.

This year, Environmental Graffiti is proud to announce a partnership with the Sony World Photography Awards (SWPA), in association with the Prince’s Rainforests Project (PRP), and all you lucky Environmental Graffiti readers have the privileged opportunity of having your work seen alongside the cream of the crop.

The central theme for the coming year is the environment, something very dear to our hearts – obviously – so we will be reporting on the awards, and bringing you the winning shots.

In keeping with SWPA’s overall ethos: “to increase global awareness of the environmental issues that are prevalent in today’s society and the ways in which these can be addressed”, there will also be a new award, the PRP Award, where the winner will benefit from sponsorship through the Prince’s Rainforests Project.

The Prince’s Rainforests Project was set up on 2007 by HRH The Prince of Wales with a view to increasing global awareness of the importance of the world’s rainforests and the need to protect them, their inhabitants and their resources.

Amateur Category Winner, Nature

“The task is to review, develop and propose practical mechanisms that acknowledge the true value of the eco-system services provided by the world’s remaining rainforests. These solutions need to provide credible incentives to host nations, and to local communities, and must out-compete the drivers of rainforest destruction.” – HRH The Prince of Wales.

Students will be happy to know they can get in on the act, too, and will win an extended university programme for their trouble, which is now available in 60 universities across six continents. All they have to do is produce one image which highlights a single environmental issue specific to their country.

The awards are to be held in Cannes from 14th – 19th April 2009. Good luck!
