There's an excellent discussion of bower birds in Olivia Judson's "Dr. Tatiana's Sex Guide to All Creation". One thing Dr. Tatiana mentions is that if a mean scientist goes into a bower and messes it up while the bower bird's gone, upon his return the bower bird will put things back where they were. Another is that while they're first arranging their bowers, they will put something down, take a step back to judge the artistic merit, then try it out somewhere else, until they're satisfied.
