We have ace photog Peter Menzel's way-cool book, MAN EATING BUGS to thank for the inspiration (if not plagiarism) of most of the photos shown above.

To Menzel's credit, he approached the subject with an open-minded curiosity and willingness to experience other cultures' tastes and eating habits and kept the "Ewwww!" factor in the background.

If we keep trashing Planet Earth, it behooves us all not to promote such a huge "ICK!" factor into the consumption of what may well be the last protein source available to us.

Hi -- Interesting post - and Man Eating BUGS is a great book.

We do educational outreach programs in the Central Ohio area and anywhere else people hire us to go. One of our most popular programs is "Cooking with BUGS!" It delves into the culture of agriculture, our relationship with our food and ... BUGS!

Blueberry and Waxworm Pancakes are one of our most well recieved dishes and a little more suited for 'American' tastes!

You can learn more about it and us at www.BUGS.org. - including some recipes! Maybe we can come cook some BUGS for you!

Thanks again for the interesting post. Happy Holidays!

Years ago, I bought a tin of chocolate covered, dried grasshoppers in an elite, gourmet, grocery story in Harvard Square, Cambridge Massachusetts. Yes I did eat them. They were dry and surprisingly bland, only a bit of chocolate taste got through to my taste buds. Thanks for Memory! :)
