Oil Spill Threatens Argentine Capital

An oil spill 20 kilometers long is heading towards Buenos Aires and may have greater catastrophic effects if it reaches land.
The fuel was released into coastal waters after a Greek merchant ship named Syros, and the Maltese-registered merchant ship Sea Bird collided. According to officials, the collision was probably caused by an uncalculated maneuver by the Greek vessel. Luckily no one was injured. Notwithstanding this, disastrously, Syros’ fuel tank was cut open, dumping a huge 14,000 cubic meters of oil into the sea.
Environmental workers are trying to prevent the oil from reaching land by using floating barriers. Authorities say a southeast wind will probably prevent it from reaching Uruguay’s coast.
The collision took place near Montevideo, southern Uruguay, and the oil slick is going straight for Buenos Aires. Sources: 1, 2, 3, 4
