Cf - the great explorer Ferdinand Magellan (Fernão de Magalhães). He was Portuguese, not Spanish, born about 1480. He obtained Spanish nationality in order to work for the Spanish Crown, initially to find a westward route to the Spice Islands of Indonesia. My thanks to Pedro Teixeira for clarifying Magellan's country of origin.
