i reckon the Lisbon earthquake or 1755 deserves a mention in some future instalment…. killing up to 100,000 people (a lot back then) and was thought to be around 9 on the ‘not yet devised’ Richter scale. it was possibly the first quake that was not caused by god or some other daemon

not to mention inspiring Voltaire’s “Candide”.

I have it understood the earth cracked, the affected city collapsed, thousands of dead and injured. Tzunamis were also caused ravagin the coast even further. It was the strongest earthquake ever recorded (9.5 on richister).
