Instead of the normal doom and gloom about global warming, carbon emissions, pollution and all the rest, some good news for a change.
A large new colony of the endangered grey-shanked douc, a rare species of colobine monkey has been discovered in Vietnam. Listed as one of the 25 most endangered species of primate, there are thought to be less than a thousand grey shanks left in the wild.
This rare species, Pygathrix cinerea, was first discovered in 1997 and in recent years its populations have been devastated by hunting and deforestation. They were thought to be on the verge of extinction.
The grey-shanked douc is distinguished by its orange face and tufts of grey hair on its forehead. It is far rarer than its two close cousins the red-shanked douc and the black-shanked douc.
