Canada’s government says it is imposing new rules to ensure seals are killed “more humanely”.

Ottawa has been heavily criticized for allowing hunters to shoot and club hundreds of thousands of seals to death each year.
Pictures of burly men smashing open the skulls of baby seals, sometimes causing a prolonged, painful death, has been a huge problem for the Canadian government.
Over 300,000 thousands seals are allowed to be killed in March and April, and are hunted for their fur and fat oil.
From now on, hunters will have to follow a three step process: After clubbing or shooting the seal, a hunter must check its eyes to ensure it is dead and, if not, the animal’s main arteries have to be cut.
Animal rights protestors argue there are not enough regulators to enforce the laws.

I don’t like (A) the clubbing of 300,000 baby seals annually by Canadians nor (B) the killing of 1,000 whales annually by the Japanese. However inspection of the UNICEF website (see: link )tells us that (C) 370,000 under-5 year old HUMAN infants die annually in Occupied Afghanistan, 90% avoidably and due to gross violation of the Geneva Convention by the Occupying Alliance (including Canada and Japan). The WHO tells us that the “total annual per capita medical expenditure” permitted by the Occupiers in Occupied Afghanistan is a mere $19. Those responsible for (C) are child-killing war criminals and not in quite the same league as those involved in (A) and (B).

Baby seal hunting has been illegal for decades in Canada.
The adult seals population is managed, as a too-large population eats too much of the recovering Cod’s food supply. By managing the seal population, Canada is helping the Atlantic cod stocks to recover.

Not that I argue with the fact that the seal hunt should be made more humane, the previous posters seem to think these people are terrible people, evil people. I live on in the Atlantic Provinces, and I know people who hunt seals. You know why they do? Because in their communities (mostly in rural Newfoundland), there is nothing else. They don’t have the abilities to be trained in IT, they have thick Newfoundland accents so they can’t work in call centers. These people keep their communities alive by the skin of their teeth.
This issue is a lot more complicated than it is made out to be.

Okay, so Canada has gone from gone from 1.7 million seals to 5.5 million seals at last count, and yet somehow the hunt is unsustainable? The fact the DFO has been able to recover the seal population to such an extent earns them a little bit more credibility than the foaming at the mouth vitriol spit out by “animal rights” groups in my eyes.

This barbaric act of killing innocent baby seals should be condemned by every human-being on this earth. Where are the so-called organisations dedicated to animals (PETA for example)? Why are they not protesting against this cruetly? Whether it is the killing of Whales in Japan or killing of seals in Canada, such things should not take place in the first place and the guilty should be punished severely (on second thoughts they should be killed in the same way).

This is one of the most disgusting, horrific things anyone can do this act makes me ashamed to be Canadian! If someone could harm an animal thats so helpless and that can not defend itself I truly believe that person would have no feeling towards a child, or even a baby that is that defenseless! Its a disgusting act of humans and I hope the people a part of seal clubbing get whats coming to them.

This is a despicable act. This is the same thing as MURDERING a human!! Where are the rights in this situation!! Apparently some people have nothing better to do but painfully and unrightfully slaughter these poor animals. Why are the seals referred to as “pups” and “babies”? Baby seals (dependent on their mothers) have not been hunted since 1987.

If a population needs to be controlled to save another i.e. fish, then I agree measures need to be introduced to sustain both species, but if the only way of doing this is to beat a defenceless baby seal, whose mother has is unable to defend it due to fetching food for its newly born young, then no I condemn such an act. Never should an animal have to endure such a painful death at such a young age, because at the end of the day humans do not have the choice of who lives and who dies, nature will sort its self out on its own. We’re too afraid to admit that in every major disaster caused by nature is aimed at humans, we are the species that nature is trying to control, it’s our population which is too vast, and we will do anything within our power for self preservation. It isn’t that there are too many seals; the fact is there are too many humans taking every other animal’s food source.

Why the hell would you want to kill a seal.. just for their fur. There is something called FAKE fur and it should be used by the designers. The designers use the fur for their stupid ugly bags and clothing and then its worn in fashion shows. In the end no one even wears the sweater in public. So basically you killed a seal for a two hour show. You take away baby seals from their parents and kill them and vise versa. BE LOGICAL. AND IF ANYONE OUT THERE WANTS TO TRY TO STOP THIS IM READY TO GIVE IN.
