Climate change fears in Australia have prompted the government to announce plans to set up a protected eco-corridor. Running the length of the East Coast, it will link Australia’s various ecosystems, from the temperate south to the northen rainforest.

The corridor is designed to allow animals and plants to flee the effects of global warming and so links various national parks and state forests. “The effects of climate change will likely to be less severe in systems that have some resilience and that we haven’t gone in and buggered-up.” David Lindenmayer, professor of conservation biology told Reuters.

Such a scheme was first mooted in the mid 1990s; however, it was only with increasing awareness of the problems global warming will cause in Australia that it was given serious attention. The continent seems likely to suffer more than the rest of the world, with accelerated temperature increases of 6.7 degrees Celsius by 2080 predicted. Indeed, so bad is the problem already that cooler southern towns are moving towards the climate of the far hotter north at a rate of 100km per year.
