The World Wildlife Fund has declared that polar bears will be extinct by 2050 unless the Canadian government can lead the world in drastic action.
Canada, which has 2/3 of the world's polar bear population inside of its borders, is obviously in a hard spot-- they have to try to reign in the human hunting against the bears, even as climate change drives them into greater contact with human populations. On top of that of course is climate change, which is progressively removing the sea ice that the bears thrive on.
The WWF report highlights that Canada is about to sell off a bear habitat on June 2nd to the oil company who supplies the highest bid; an imperative is laid at the state to issue guidelines for protecting the bears and their habitat even as the exploration goes on. Without it, they claim, the bears have exhibited a willingness to walk all the way to Russia, or travel hundreds of miles inland in search of safe habitats and food.

i think that the canadian government take action at once. it is a horrid thing to do, by selling off the polar bear habitat. they should get eaten by the bears. this is the reason that bears are so viscious in the first place! because the government and such doesn't giva a crap about anyone or anything but themselves. they've got enough money and food. why make the polar bears and whales suffer for their own selfish reasons?

I think that everyon should help with this and try to keep the polar bears alive. We can all try and stop global warming and pollution. With hope and effort, the polar bears will not have to become history. I think that the poachers should die or go to jail because they are being so cruel to the animals, not just polar bears. If the poaching still goes on, the world might not have anymore animals living. Animals should get the same amount of respect as we do. People are not above the animals. We are of equal height. Polar bears are losing land to live on and have to search in farther areas for food than they are used to. I mean, polar bears don't have to be extinct. All we have to do is give some love to them and try. SAVE THE POLAR BEARS!!

Okay, just joking, but it's obvious that the whole global warming debate has reached dangerous levels for the environmentalists as they once again trot out the cute, lovable, polar bears to tug at our heartstrings.

Clearly the Canadian government needs to take action, but this is a big job and they need the full support of other environmentally conscious nations. As for the drilling. It's worth noting that oil drilling in North America will become more and more common as people grow tired of having gas prices dictated by dependency on foreign oil. This could further threaten the bears habitat so inevitably alternative energy debates get thrown into the issue. However, I do believe that humanity is beginning to develop a special bond with polar bears. A lot of people fear that if the polar bears go, we may go next. I'm convinced that even though polar bears are threatened that the necessary precautions will be taken to protect them. Too many people are talking about it for something not to happen. Not to mention I'm sure Coca Cola will chime in with an initiative to protect the bears.
